Understanding the Pakistan Stock Exchange
The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) is the country's only stock exchange, formed when the Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad exchanges merged. Its best-known benchmark is the KSE-100, an index of one hundred companies chosen by market capitalisation across sectors — when people say "the market is up", they usually mean this index.
What moves the market
Share prices respond to company earnings, dividend announcements and sector news, but the whole index tends to move on broader signals: State Bank interest rate decisions, inflation readings, rupee movement, IMF programme reviews, and the federal budget. Political stability and global commodity prices matter too, since several heavyweight listed companies are in oil, gas, banking, cement and fertiliser.
