Tax in Pakistan, Without the Jargon
The Federal Board of Revenue collects federal taxes, while provincial authorities handle sales tax on services. For most salaried people the tax is deducted at source, but filing an annual return is a separate obligation — and the one that determines whether you appear on the Active Taxpayers List.
Why filer status matters
Being on the Active Taxpayers List generally means lower withholding tax on banking transactions, vehicle registration and property transfers. Non-filers pay higher rates on the same transactions, which is often more than the cost of simply filing. The list is updated by the FBR and can be checked online.
